For the atrium of an office building in Hong Kong, HDA were commissioned by Swire Properties to create a monumental and sculptural staircase which would give an iconic identity to the building. Located at the border of Wan Chai, a popular area of the Central business district, the inspiration for the staircase was the joyful atmosphere created by the many neon lights of Wan Chai. The atrium consists of the reception lobby on the 1st floor and a garden on the 2nd. The staircase develops the link between both floors in a spiral movement inspired by the octagonal shape of the building.
The staircase consists of ribbons on the ceiling of the garden level, the tracery of which becomes the walls and railings of the staircase. The ensemble is lit by bright LED strips which are reminiscent of the neons of Wan Chai and which accentuate the movement of the spiral.
