Indigo, Swire Properties’ mixed-use development in Beijing, comprises 3 levels of commercial shopping, a hotel and an office building, all housed within a 5 hectare park. HDA were asked to design a 7000m2 wintergarden that acts as a transitional zone between the shopping center and the park.

We decided to shelter the wintergarden by a generous undulating canopy which creates a fluid gesture toward the park. The gridshell mesh roof of the canopy is edged by a steel vertebrae which rests on a line of vertical columns and suspends a cable-wall facade. The minimalist cable structure highlights the transparency of this key interface with the park.

The roof mesh is a subdivided into triangular modules, whose composition follows the same fluid movement of the roof towards the park. The modules seat glazing panels with integral sunshading treatment and louvers, which generate soft light and delicate shade patterns
