acques Scott, a fine wine distributor on the island of Grand Cayman, is expanding its outlets to the community of West Bay. HDA were asked to design a small shopping center around the new retail facility, to best exploit the full development potential of the site, with capacity to accommodate other boutique stores and consultant’s offices or restaurant facilities on an upper floor.

The proposed design is a response to the local climate and architectural heritage, as well as to specific site attributes, notably a protected mangrove pond located at the rear of the site.

A split-level central mall provides visibility of all the shops and opens a way through the site towards the mangrove pond. The east/west axis of the mall channels prevailing trade winds for natural cooling. A curved coral stone wall forms a base for the complex, whilst the upper floor is a lighter structure in composite timber. Generous verandahs and operable louvers are provided for protection from the sun, recalling the practical and functional nature of traditional colonial architecture on the island.
